Overview

Main Job Purpose

The Lands Authority, in collaboration with the University of Malta, is launching a unique Worker-Student Scheme for individuals pursuing the Award in Sustainable Land Management. The fully funded course is a one-year, assignment-based academic programme leading to a recognised MQF Level 4 qualification in Sustainable Land Management. This initiative provides the opportunity to gain practical work experience within the Authority while undertaking a formal qualification aligned with the Authority’s core mission.

This scheme is designed for motivated individuals who are committed to developing expertise in sustainable land management and contributing meaningfully to public land administration. This scheme represents a career-building opportunity with long-term potential within Malta’s public land administration sector. Eligibility

• Applicants must have applied and subsequently received an official acceptance letter from the University of Malta for the Award in Sustainable Management course.

• Applicants must be willing to enter an official undertaking governed by the Central Administration’s guidelines.

• Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in land management, public administration, and sustainable development.

Progression Opportunities

Upon successful completion of:

• The Award in Sustainable Land Management programme, and

• A concluding colloquium exercise,

As a Trainee, you will:

• Automatically progress to the next grade level (Grade C) on an indefinite contract with the Lands Authority.

• Be eligible for benefits as defined in the Collective Agreement applicable at the time.

Employment Conditions

• Full-time engagement with flexible hours to accommodate academic commitments.

• Trainees are expected to report to work when not attending lectures.

• Release from work (daily or hourly) will be granted to attend classes held during office hours.

• The full cost of the course is funded by the Lands Authority.

• Employment is on a fixed-term (1 year) definite contract, linked to the completion of the training programme, transitioning to an indefinite contract upon successful completion of the programme.

Terms and Conditions

• Trainees who do not successfully complete the academic programme will have their contract terminated.

• In such cases, full reimbursement of course costs to the Lands Authority will be required.

Main Responsibilities

• Actively participate in the Lands Authority’s daily operations while undergoing formal academic training.

• Apply theoretical knowledge from the course to practical scenarios within the Authority.

• Attend scheduled lectures as part of the Award in Sustainable Land Management course.

• Demonstrate satisfactory academic and professional progress throughout the duration of the scheme.

• Making use of departments IT systems and databases as well as handling email correspondence. 

• Creating basic reports about the Authority's operations, such as statistical data or relevant content that is directed by management. 

• Help Senior Management with tasks such as taking minutes and preparing any documentation required for meetings. 

• Provide routine information to clients over the phone or via other communication tools.

• Assist superiors regarding general clerical duties including minute taking and preparation of any necessary documents.

• Prepare necessary documents for processing such as filling of basic forms.

• Make use of photocopiers, scanners, shredders, PCs, printers, and other equipment as the need may dictate. 

• Any other duties which may be required from time to time and as may be directed by Management.

General Operational Management

• To provide support to superiors as required.

• Carrying out routine daily tasks according to policies, procedures, or instructions.

• Following up on own tasks assigned.

Quality Assurance

• To deliver good quality work, accurate reports, and information, both within the Authority and externally.

Qualification and Experience

Applicants for the course must be in possession of a Matriculation Certificate comprising six subjects:

• Two subjects at Advanced Level,

• Three subjects at Intermediate Level, and

• Systems of Knowledge.

The certificate must include passes in a language, a science subject, and a humanistic subject.

Candidates must also satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission to the University of Malta, namely:

• A pass at Grade 5 or better in the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations in English Language, Maltese, and Mathematics.

Candidates who do not meet the SEC requirements may sit for the Standard University Assessment Test, administered by the University of Malta, covering Mathematics, English Language, and Maltese. Further details can be found here: University Assessment Structure
